Service temperature
EN 1092-1 group 14E0: −253 … 600 °C. For flanged valves, ASME B16.34 (CF8M) ratings end at 538 °C. Cryogenic service depends on impact testing.
This is the limit of the material itself. A valve's service temperature is usually set by the seal and seat materials; product pages give it for each seal option.
Physical properties and heat treatment

- 7.9 g/cm³
- HEAT TREATMENT
- Solution annealing 1080–1150 °C, rapid cooling (water).
Media suitability GENERAL TREND
Emsal assessment. The final choice is made from corrosion tables, taking concentration, temperature, chloride content and flow velocity into account.
Strengths and weaknesses
Strengths
- Complex body geometry can be cast in one piece
- Same corrosion behaviour as 1.4401
- Repairable by welding
Weaknesses
- Risk of casting defects (porosity, shrinkage): radiographic or penetrant testing may be required
- Lower proof strength than the wrought grade
- Expensive in small quantities because of pattern cost
Manufacturing and use
- ECONOMY
- Medium. More economical than machining from plate in series production; for one-offs and small quantities the pattern cost is decisive.
- MANUFACTURING METHODS
- Sand casting · Investment casting (lost wax): small bodies · Centrifugal casting: rings and seats
- TYPICAL VALVE PARTS
- Body · Bonnet · Disc
