Notes
- This table has been compiled by Emsal from the relevant standards. For the full text of the standard, refer to your national standards body.
- Both ends of the socket are threaded ISO 7-1 Rp (parallel internal thread); it forms a tight joint with pipe that has a taper external (R) thread.
- The medium type (DIN 2986) is for general installations; the heavy type (BS 1387) has a thicker wall and is longer.
- A half socket is threaded at one end and welded to a tank or pipe at the other (e.g. for an instrument connection).
- Accuracy and currency are not guaranteed; use the current edition of the standard for design and purchasing decisions. How the library is compiled →

Joint type and P&ID symbol
A socket (coupling) is a fitting with female threads at both ends; it joins two pipes, or a pipe and a male-ended part, end to end.
female partmale part, pipegasket / sealing tapethread
- Cut external threads on the pipe ends.
- Apply tape or compound to the threads.
- Screw the socket onto one pipe, then the other; if the line will be taken apart, use a union instead.
Used to extend threaded pipework and to connect equipment into the line. Half sockets are also welded on to create nozzles on tanks and vessels.
P&ID: Threaded jointTwo short thin lines perpendicular to the pipeline. Symbol library →
