Features
03Operation
- The movement of the valve stem actuates mechanical or proximity switches in the box
- This is converted into an open/closed electrical signal
- The signal is sent to a PLC, DCS or SCADA system for remote monitoring
- A visual indicator also allows checks on site
Advantages
- Remote monitoring and control
- Process safety – reduces the risk of incorrect valve positions
- Easy installation and calibration
- Withstands harsh field conditions
- Reduces the need for manual intervention
Applications
- Chemical and petrochemical plants
- Water treatment and distribution systems
- Food and pharmaceutical production lines
- Power plants
- HVAC systems
- Marine and ship machinery
- Fire-fighting and safety systems
Mechanical and proximity switches compared
| Feature | Mechanical switch | Proximity (non-contact) switch |
|---|---|---|
| Operating principle | Actuated by physical contact | Magnetic, capacitive or optical sensing |
| Durability | More prone to wear | Longer life thanks to non-contact design |
| Precision | Medium – requires mechanical tolerance | High – precise position sensing |
| Ease of installation | Simple, common installation | May need electrical setting and calibration |
| Environmental resistance | Can be affected by dust and moisture | IP67/IP68 for harsh environments |
| Price | Usually more economical | More expensive, but low maintenance cost |
| Applications | General industrial applications | Explosive atmospheres, sensitive processes |
