Notes

  • Dimensions are taken from our supplier's stainless steel nipple tables; length and across-flats may differ slightly between manufacturers.
  • Nipple threads are ISO 7-1 R (taper external thread); they form a tight joint with valves and fittings that have Rp or Rc internal threads.
  • A hex nipple joins two internally threaded parts and is tightened at the hexagon (S). Double / single-ended nipples are pipe pieces (threaded at one or both ends, the other end plain for welding).
  • Accuracy and currency are not guaranteed; use the current edition of the standard for design and purchasing decisions. How the library is compiled →

Joint type and P&ID symbol

A nipple is a short piece of pipe with male threads at both ends; it joins two female-ended parts (e.g. a valve and a fitting).

  1. Apply tape or compound to the nipple threads.
  2. Screw the nipple into one part, then into the mating part.
  3. On a hex nipple, apply the spanner to the hexagon.

Used to connect valves, strainers, gauges and fittings without a length of pipe in between. A long nipple replaces a short pipe.

P&ID: Threaded jointTwo short thin lines perpendicular to the pipeline. Symbol library →
