Features
03Design
- Elbows are usually made in 90°, 45° or 180°.
- Available seamless or welded.
- Joined to the pipeline by butt welding.
Advantages
- High mechanical strength: suitable for pressure and vibration.
- Leak-tight joint: welding keeps the leakage risk low.
- Long-lasting: resistant to wear and corrosion (depending on material).
- Standards: manufactured to international standards such as ASME B16.9 and DIN 2605.
Considerations
- Weld quality must be verified with NDT (radiography, dye penetrant).
- Orientation and slope must match the system design.
- Check material certificates and compliance with the standard.
- Minimise corrosion risk through material selection and external coatings.
| Elbow type | Description | Application |
|---|---|---|
| Long radius (LR) | Lower resistance, smoother flow | Large-diameter lines, process systems |
| Short radius (SR) | Suits tight spaces, may cause higher resistance | Space-restricted systems |
| 180° return bend (U-type) | Reverses the line direction, typically in special processes | Steam and cooling lines |
