Features
03Design
- A short cylindrical piece of pipe.
- Usually female-threaded at both ends to join two male-threaded pipes.
- Materials vary with the application: galvanised steel, stainless steel, PVC, brass, bronze, etc.
- Threads usually to ISO 7-1 (BSP) or ANSI NPT.
Advantages
- Easy assembly and dismantling: quick work thanks to the threads.
- Modularity: pipework can easily be extended or modified.
- Cost-effective: high functionality at low cost.
- Wide compatibility: versions for different standards and pipe sizes.
Considerations
- Choose the material and type to suit the application (e.g. stainless steel for acidic media).
- Thread type and size must match the standard; a mismatch causes leaks.
- Seal with PTFE tape or a gasket.
- Check pressure and temperature limits against the manufacturer's catalogue.
| Coupling type | Characteristics | Applications |
|---|---|---|
| Threaded coupling | Threaded at both ends, used to join pipes. | Common in general installations |
| Socket weld coupling | The pipe end fits into the coupling and is fixed with an external fillet weld. | Pressurised and gas lines |
| Compression coupling | Joined by compressing a sealing ring. | Plastic/PVC pipelines |
| Reducing coupling | Joins pipes of different sizes. | Size transitions |
