Features
03Considerations
- Choose the material and type to suit the application.
- The gasket must match the flange facing (flat face, raised face, ring joint, etc.).
- Tighten bolts evenly during installation; overstressing can cause cracks.
- Take protective measures against corrosion and vibration.
Main functions of flanges
- Securely connect pipes, valves, pumps and equipment.
- Prevent leaks when used with gaskets or seals.
- Make maintenance and replacement easy.
- Provide durable joints under high pressure, temperature and chemical exposure.
Materials
- Carbon steel (St37, ASTM A105): the most common choice for general-purpose piping.
- Stainless steel (AISI 304, AISI 316): high corrosion resistance; ideal for food, pharmaceutical and chemical plants.
- Cast iron (GG25, GGG40.3): low cost; used in water and steam lines.
- Bronze & copper alloys (Rg5, CuSn10): suitable for seawater and special chemical environments.
Standards and dimension systems
- Manufactured to international standards such as DIN, ANSI, BS and JIS.
- Pressure ratings usually range from PN 10 to PN 100 or from Class 150 to Class 2500.
- Dimensions, number of bolt holes and facing are defined by these standards.
| Flange type | Characteristics | Applications |
|---|---|---|
| Slip-on | Slipped over the pipe and welded in place. | Water and HVAC installations |
| Weld neck | Strong joint at high pressure/temperature. | Petrochemicals, power plants |
| Threaded flange | Connects without welding. | Small-diameter gas or water lines |
| Blind flange | Closes off the end of a pipe. | Line termination or test lines |
