Features
03Design
- A union has three main parts: the threaded body, the union nut that tightens the joint, and a gasket or sealing face.
- They are threaded on, usually sealed with PTFE tape or liquid sealant.
- Being easy to undo, they make maintenance much easier than permanent joints.
Advantages
- Quick connection: threaded joints without welding.
- Wide compatibility: many thread types and sizes.
- Easy repair: quick replacement in case of leaks or damage.
- Economical: fast connections at low cost.
Considerations
- Thread compatibility matters: choose correctly between standards such as BSP and NPT.
- Seal with PTFE tape or a gasket.
- Choose the material to suit the application; stainless nipples are recommended for chemicals.
- Overtightening can strip threads or crack the nipple; torque-controlled assembly is recommended.
| Union type | Characteristics | Applications |
|---|---|---|
| Straight union | Straight connection, same size at both ends | Standard pipe runs |
| Elbow union (90°) | 90° change of direction between two pipes | Changing direction in tight spaces |
| Reducing union | Joins two different sizes | Where a size change is needed |
| Flanged union | Includes a flanged connection | Detachable joint in high-pressure systems |
