STANDARDEN 1982FORMCastingFormer DINRg5 · G-CuSn5ZnPbASTM B62 / B584C83600 (near)

Tin-zinc-lead bronze (gunmetal). Thanks to its good castability, pressure tightness and resistance to water, it is the classic material for small valve bodies, check valve discs and fittings.

Service temperature

PN16 bronze valves are rated for full pressure up to 120 °C; above that the rating drops quickly (~10 bar at 150 °C, ~6 bar at 200 °C).

This is the limit of the material itself. A valve's service temperature is usually set by the seal and seat materials; product pages give it for each seal option.

Emsal assessment. The final choice is made from corrosion tables, taking concentration, temperature, chloride content and flow velocity into account.

Strengths and weaknesses

Strengths

  • Very good castability and pressure tightness
  • Good resistance in fresh water and mild seawater
  • Easy to machine (lead)
  • Good behaviour in friction and wear

Weaknesses

  • Contains lead: drinking water applications require a lead-free alloy
  • Risk of stress corrosion in ammonia and caustics
  • Low strength: limited at high pressure and in large sizes

Manufacturing and use

ECONOMY
Medium to high. Depends on the copper price; competitive with stainless steel in small sizes.
MANUFACTURING METHODS
Sand casting · Gravity die and centrifugal casting · Continuous cast bar
TYPICAL VALVE PARTS
