Features
03Operation
- Compressed air is fed to the piston or diaphragm inside the actuator.
- The movement is transferred to the valve stem and the valve opens or closes.
- In single-acting models a spring provides the return stroke; double-acting models use air in both directions
- The actuator can be integrated with PLC, SCADA or manual control systems
Advantages
- Fast response – quicker than electric actuators
- Safe in explosive atmospheres – produces no sparks
- Energy efficient – consumes air only when moving
- Low maintenance – simple mechanism, long life
- Remote automation – fully compatible with PLC and SCADA systems
Applications
- Chemical and petrochemical plants
- Water treatment and distribution systems
- Food and pharmaceutical production lines
- Power plants
- HVAC systems
- Marine and ship machinery
- Fire-fighting and safety systems
Actuator types compared
| Actuator type | Power source | Advantages | Disadvantages |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pneumatic | Compressed air | Fast response, safe, low cost | Lower precision, may require an air supply |
| Hydraulic | Pressurised fluid | High force, precise control | Risk of leaks, maintenance, costly |
| Electric | Electrical power | Precise control, clean operation, easy integration | Slower response, may be unsuitable for explosive atmospheres |

NAMUR solenoid valve
NAMUR solenoid valves direct the compressed air to the actuator in response to an electrical signal, controlling the actuator and thereby opening or closing the valve.

Limit switch box
Limit switch boxes are used in industrial automation to monitor the position of a valve or another moving mechanical part. They are usually combined with pneumatic and electric actuators, and can also be mounted directly on a manually operated valve.

Positioner
A pneumatic positioner precisely sets the opening of a control valve. It receives a signal (e.g. 4–20 mA), supplies air to the actuator accordingly and sets the valve position.
