Ductile cast iron, low temperature

STANDARDEN 1563FORMCastingMaterial no.EN-JS1025Former DINGGG-40.3

Fully ferritic spheroidal graphite cast iron with guaranteed impact energy at −20 °C. Used instead of GGG-40 for valves working outdoors in cold climates and exposed to water hammer.

Service temperature

Lower value: the temperature of the EN 1563 impact requirement (−20 °C). Upper limit: the EN 1092-2 value for the same family (350 °C).

This is the limit of the material itself. A valve's service temperature is usually set by the seal and seat materials; product pages give it for each seal option.

Low temperature

Emsal assessment. The final choice is made from corrosion tables, taking concentration, temperature, chloride content and flow velocity into account.

Strengths and weaknesses

Strengths

  • Impact guarantee at −20 °C
  • Higher ductility than GJS-400-15 (A ≥ 18%)
  • Resistant to water hammer

Weaknesses

  • A difficult grade for foundries: the fully ferritic structure and impact value are often missed
  • Requires coating for corrosion protection

Manufacturing and use

ECONOMY
Low; slightly more expensive than GJS-400-15.
MANUFACTURING METHODS
Sand casting + ferritizing anneal (if needed)
